Application

 

Eligibility

TYS@UST is targeted at top-ranking high school students who will have completed Grades 10 to 12 (or equivalent). Admitted applicants are expected to show exceptional academic promise and receive excellent recommendation from the school/ relevant referee.

Applicants will be required to submit their school performance record as well as one of the following:

  1. Recommendation Form completed by the applicant's school principal or academic counselor; or
 

2.

Recommendation Form completed by the school principal, academic counselor or a relevant referee outside of school along with the results of one or more international standardized test(s). The referee has to be:

  • Aged 25 or above,
  • Unrelated to the applicant by kinship, and
  • In an educational leadership position, e.g. counselor, pastor, priest, senior director of an extracurricular program, community leader, etc.
  • The suitability of the referee is subject to approval and will be considered on a case by case basis. Students are encouraged to contact the Secretariat of TYS@UST 2010 if they have any queries.

    High proficiency in the English language is expected of the students as all courses will be taught in English. Applicants are recommended to submit the result of any international English assessment examination, if available. Students who have studied at least 4 years in an English-speaking school will be exempted.

    To further assess the student's aptitude for learning, applicants are required to write a 500-word personal testimonial, stating the reasons for applying for this program.

     
    For academically talented middle and high school students in Grades 7 to 9 (or equivalent), please visit http://cty.jhu.edu/hongkong/ for the joint summer program in Hong Kong organized by the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

     

    Application Procedure & Fees

    Program Fee HK$24,000
    Early Bird Rate* HK$19,800 (on or before 28 Feb 2009)
    HK$22,000 (on or before 1 Apr 2009)

    The program fee includes all lectures, laboratory sessions, learning materials, student residence accommodation, campus facilities, and official program activities.

    * To enjoy the early bird rate, a completed application form with the application fee must be received on or before the respective early bird closing date. Applicants given an admission offer should confirm acceptance by full payment of the program fee within 14 days from the date of offer.

     

    Application Deadline: 1 May 2009

    Application offers will be made on a rolling basis. Early application is recommended as spaces may be filled up by qualified applicants prior to the deadline. Late applicants may be put on a waiting list and be considered if spaces are available.


    Application Procedure

      Step 1

    Go to Download Area to download the Application Form and Recommendation Form, or contact our office to obtain the application package.

     

    Step 2

    Complete the Application Form and include the following when returning the form:

    1. Copy of Hong Kong Identity Card/ Passport
    2. Application fee (Paid by HK dollar cheque or bank draft payable to "The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology")

    Send the whole package by post to:

    Room 1401 Academic Building
    The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
    Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong

    Deliver the Recommendation Form to your school principal, academic counselor or other referee*.

     

    Step 3

    An acknowledgement email will be sent to you upon receipt of the Application Form. There will be a reminder on the supporting documents that need to be submitted within 21 days:

    1. Completed Recommendation Form (in an envelope signed and sealed by the recommender)
    2. Copy of most recent school report card/ transcript
    3. Copies of HKCEE or public examination results and certificates (if available)
    4. Copies of SAT, World Class Arena Test or other international standardized test results and certificates (if available)
    5. Copies of TOEFL or IELTS results and certificates (if available)
    6. Copies of international prize or award certificates (if available)
    7. 2 recent passport-sized color photos

    Supporting documents and application fee should be sent to the above address. Applicants will be notified of the result within 4 weeks after all supporting documents are received.

    *Students submitting international standardized test results have the option of asking a referee outside of school to complete the Recommendation Form. Refer to the Eligibility section for details.


    Visa Information

    Non-local students must obtain a Hong Kong student visa before traveling to Hong Kong. Students should apply for the required visa as soon as they have been admitted to the program. Our program staff will provide necessary assistance in visa application in due course.
