Objective

Young people are often encouraged to "put their best foot forward" and "be all they can be". For the exceptionally talented, however, it may be hard to fully extend their potentials and find out how far they can really go. Studies have found that if not nurtured at an early stage, the distinct gifts of these individuals might be hidden, ignored and eventually wasted. These bright young minds require special guidance to truly flourish, and pursue what they are meant to achieve.

The Talented Youth Summer Program at HKUST (TYS@UST) aims to provide special nurturing to talented pre-university youths by helping them to:

  • Explore their full potential and develop their personal goals;
  • Foster creativity and enhance critical thinking; and
  • Become global citizens through multicultural teamwork and collaborative learning.

With a focus on science and technology, the second HKUST Talented Youth Summer Program will be conducted in the summer of 2010. The program will encourage students to study, experiment and apply scientific discoveries and their profound impacts on societal development. With an inquisitive mind backed up by solid knowledge, these future leaders will be better prepared for the impending challenges of the 21st century.

Program Organizers and Sponsors

TYS@UST 2010 is jointly organized by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University, and sponsored by Savantas Policy Institute.

HKUST
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was established in October 1991 with the mission to advance learning and knowledge through teaching and research, particularly in science, technology, engineering, management and business studies.

Pioneer in Research and Development
Since its opening, HKUST has established itself as an intellectual powerhouse, energizing the community's transformation into a knowledge-based society, and securing a place on the academic world map in record-breaking time. As an innovator in research and teaching, the University's groundbreaking work in science, engineering, business, humanities and social science is successfully pushing back the boundaries of many disciplinary areas in the Information Age. A few examples of research breakthroughs include:

  • Fabrication of the world's smallest single-walled carbon nanotubes;
  • Development of a fast motion estimation algorithm recognized as part of MPEG-4;
  • Discovery of the fifth gene linked to schizophrenia;
  • Development of the first ever video streaming system for mobile phones based on Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS) technology;
  • Exclusively designing a new and highly cost-effective anti-malarial drug (Artemisone) to help patients in developing countries; and
  • Cost-effective production of human epidermal growth factor (hEGF) for practical applications.

Internationalized Learning Environment
All courses at HKUST are taught in English except selected courses in Humanities, Social Science and Chinese Language. The current student population is over 9,000, which is supported by 461 highly internationalized faculty members from over 35 countries. All faculty members are PhD holders, the majority of them from leading North American universities. With the hope of broadening students' global perspective, the University's extensive exchange programs offer students the opportunity to study at more than 100 top-notch institutions worldwide, while over 400 students from overseas come to HKUST every year on exchange.
